To be employed as a Service Technician with Peugeot you need to be highly skilled. You could, for example, be doing essential service and maintenance work, using high-tech diagnostic equipment to identify faults, repairing worn components or replacing tyres or exhausts. Whatever you do, though, you need to achieve high standards because other peoples’ lives depend on your work.
Which is the best fit for you?
The Service Technician role covers a wide range of specialisms. For example, you could choose to focus on working on cars or light commercial vehicles. There is also the opportunity to specialise in the electrics and electronics of a vehicle as an auto electrician, which is becoming even more important as the technology in vehicles becomes more advanced. Other aspects can involve technicianscarrying out replacement of certain vehicle parts, replacing worn tyres and check wheel balance and alignment.
Although the levels of skill may vary they are all jobs which require concentrated, physical activity.
In some cases you may be relying on your in-depth knowledge of a vehicle and its systems. But you will also use high-tech equipment to find out what’s wrong with the vehicle and then use a range of tools to remove, replace or repair faulty or worn components.
Technicians usually enjoy these jobs because they like being around cars.
They can gain the respect of their friends for being able to sort out breakdowns and they get satisfaction from being able to put right something that’s gone wrong. There is usually a good atmosphere in the dealership and workshop. People work by themselves but are also part of a team. And there are equal opportunities for males and females.
Skills and talents
To do this job with Peugeot well you have to be good with your hands. You will also need to be a problem solver, where you will need to be patient because sometimes the answers to a vehicle problem won’t be obvious. You also must have an eye for detail, be very safety conscious and be methodical in the way you work - even if you are under pressure and working to a tight deadline. All this adds up to a working life that is far from boring or routine.
Getting started
To begin this career you need to be trained and gain qualifications. All these jobs require you to undertake an Apprenticeship. To enter an Apprenticeship you will need good results from school. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland you will need 3 GCSEs at A-C, especially Maths and English, and in Scotland you will need the equivalent Standard Grades at General/Credit level. These qualifications will help you develop the knowledge and skills required to operate in this high-tech industry, where the skills needed are becoming ever more advanced as for example, computer systems are now at the heart of almost every running part of a vehicle.
An Apprenticeship combines work experience with a Peugeot dealer and training with Peugeot UK at one of the specialst centres based across the UK. To satisfy the requirements of an Apprenticeship you will need to gain a Technical Certificate, Key/Core Skills that include communication, numeracy and information technology, together with an NVQ/SVQ that proves you can apply your skills and knowledge in the workplace.
...And once you’ve started you will find that, as you become qualified and experienced, there are plenty of opportunities to develop your career by moving into supervision, management, training or other related areas such as Peugeot Master Technician status. This means there’s a world of opportunities ahead of you.
